The internet is used for almost every commercial as well as non-commercial transaction today. People use the internet to pay their bills, send and receive cash, shop, subscribe to memberships, buy movies and songs and a host of other services. If you are a regular user of the internet, you will know that almost each of these sites requires you to sign up or register. This means you have to set a password to access the site. While passwords for average shopping or membership sites may not be all that vulnerable, passwords to your bank account (internet banking) should be as secure as possible!
There are several resources available on the internet like tipia.org that provides you with great guides on how to download multimedia safely. Setting a safe password isn’t exactly rocket science! There are some simple rules that you can follow to make sure no one can crack your password:
- Never use names, numbers or dates that people know are connected to you. For instance, keeping a password with your mom’s name followed by her birth year is more easily cracked.
- Don’t use words that are commonly used passwords as hacking software will try these out first!
- Always use both alphabet as well as numbers as part of your password. Such passwords are known as ‘Alphanumeric’. Wherever possible include symbols as well.
- Include variations like using alphabets both in upper as well as lower case.
- Make sure that, even though the password is complicated, it is easy for you to remember. You should also never keep a written record of your passwords.
- The longer the password, the tougher to crack!
