• NASA Media – news conference coverage video and audio materials are available to news organizations, national and international.

• NASA HD – NASA provides high-definition photos and videos from manned and unmanned spaceflight missions, as well as other events.

The NASA website isn’t the only place to view multimedia from space, of course. NASA TV is also available in high definition on UStream, as YouTube videos, and in mobile streaming format for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Computers have to reduce verbal commands to binary code, where double meanings and shades of gray by definition can’t exist. But humans use slang, metaphors and voice inflection to convey their ideas. How do you get a computer to recognize what you really mean? You write an algorithm.

An Israeli research team has developed SASI, which stands for Semi-Supervised Algorithm for Sarcasm Identification. They took 66,000 product reviews on Amazon.com and had three human annotators tag all the sentences they could find that contained sarcasm. They then noted certain patterns that emerged and created a system that classifies each statement by level or type of sarcasm.

When the application using the algorithm was turned loose on a new set of reviews, it identified sarcasm accurately in 77 percent of instances.

What’s the real-world use of this? Content generators will be better able to make recommendations to users if they know when a piece of text is joking or not. And bots that comb the Web for opinions on products or issues will have a better chance of separating the straightforward from the snarky.

Advances such as this bring artificial intelligence one step closer to approximating the human condition. But don’t worry – there will always be plenty of servile machines to take us far too literally.
